Sigfox picks Eutelsat to support base station backhaul

Sigfox announced it will deploy satellite technology developed by Eutelsat Communications to expand its IoT services infrastructure. Sigfox will integrate SmartLNB, a low bitrate, low-power satellite technology developed by Eutelsat as a way for base stations on its wireless network to exchange data.

Sigfox said SmartLNB is a good alternative for base station backhaul connectivity because of its very high reliability and ubiquitous coverage. This simplifies the selection of base station sites while lowering operating costs. The US will be the first market where Sigfox deploys the satellite system, using the Eutelsat 113 West A satellite to ensure full North American coverage. Eutelsat’s global satellite fleet also opens the opportunity for extensions to other regions of the world.
