Silent Circle raises USD 50 mln, buys out Blackphone venture
Silent Circle, the company behind the encryption software powering the Blackphone, has raised USD 50 million in fresh capital from private investors. The new financing is expected to help the company expand its secure communications software in the business market. In addition, Silent Circle plans to buy out its partner in the Blackphone venture, the Spanish handset maker Geeksphone. This gives Silent Circle full control of the SGP venture.

Blackphone maker Geekphone ceases activities

Spanish smartphone company Geeksphone, maker of the Blackphone, announced it is to cease activities after six years, blaming a lack of innovation and insufficient support for community-based development among the sector's major players for its decision. Geekphone was the first Spanish player to develop a smartphone, the first European company to launch an Android-based phone and the first global brand to launch a Firefox OS mobile device.

KPN launches Blackphone

KPN plans to launch the secure Blackphone within the week, Emerce reported. The device was unveiled during the Cyber Security Week in the Hague and will sell for EUR 213 and EUR 254, depending on the data bundle chosen.
