SK Hynix bids on Elpida Memory
Korean chipmaker SK Hynix has made a preliminary bid on Japanese chipmaker Elpida Memory. The latter filed for protection from creditors in late February and has been looking for investors or partners for several months. SK Hynix is currently the world's second-largest mobile DRAM maker and a merger with number-three Elpida would bring it closer to market leader Samsung. Arirang News reports citing sources familiar with the matter that Micron Technology and Toshiba also plan to join the bidding process for the troubled firm.

Elpida grows to 3rd place in DRAM market in Q1

Elpida, the bankrupt memory maker searching for a buyer, moved to third place in the DRAM market in the first quarter of 2012, suprassing its likely buyer, Micron Technology. SK Hynix withdraws Elpida Memory bid

Chipmaker SK Hynix has pulled is bid for Japanese company Elpida Memory, the AFP reports. "We decided not to participate . . . it doesn't seem very advantageous strategically," board Chairman Choi Tae Won said. In March, SK Hynix revealed it had expressed interest in bidding for the troubled firm.

SK Hynix losses widen as memory prices fall

SK Hynix reported first-quarter revenues of KRW 2.388 trillion, down 6 percent from the previous quarter and 14 percent lower year-on-year. TPG and China's Hony Capital are jointly bidding for Elpida Memory.
