
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) has slapped domestic mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus with record fines for launching illegal promotions related to mobile phone, internet and web TV service bundles, Yonhap news agency reports. The KCC fined SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus a total of KRW 10.7 billion for unfair marketing practices.
LG Uplus was fined KRW 4.59 billion won, while SK Telecom and KT were fined KRW 3.75 billion and KRW 2.33 billion, respectively. The mobile carriers were accused of offering benefits about KRW 500,000 to each customer who subscribed to bundles that included the three services.
In terms of fines related to bundling services, the combined fines of KRW 10.7 billion were the largest ever, the KCC also said. Back in 2011, the three mobile operators were also fined a total of KRW 7.89 billion for unfair marketing practices related to their bundling services.
