South Korean mobile operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have agreed to commercially launch their 5G networks at the same time in 2019, Koreajoongangdaily reports, citing the Korean Minister of Science and ICT You Young-min. The measure aims to avoid excessive competition between local operators. At a meeting held on 17 July in Seoul, SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ agreed to simultaneously launch their 5G network on ‘Korea 5G Day’, the minister said.
The target deadline is likely to be around March 2019, under a draft released by the presidential committee last year. According to the minister, the three operators will cooperate with local small and midsize companies, such as network equipment developers, to power their 5G-related businesses.
