SK Telecom, Microsoft partner on 5G, AI, cloud services
South Korean operator SK Telecom and Microsoft have signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on 5G, AI and cloud services. SK Telecom and Microsoft plan to combine their technological capabilities in areas such as 5G, AI and cloud to jointly promote their IoT business including smart factory; AI technologies; media and entertainment services.

To support its smart factory IoT business operations, SK Telecom and Microsoft have set up a business strategic partnership in February this year to launch Microsoft Azure with Metatron, SK Telecom’s self-developed big data service. SK Telecom and Microsoft now plan to upgrade the service and implement joint marketing activities.

By combining the capabilities of SK Telecom’s AI platform NUGU with Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant, the two companies plan to offer new AI-powered products and services, including smart speakers for residential users and other offerings for enterprise customers.

SK Telecom plans to adopt the Microsoft 365 platform and then expand Microsoft 365 to other ICT companies under the SK Group umbrella. The two partners will combine Microsoft’s workplace devices and services, such as Surface and Office 365, with SK Telecom’s products and services.
