Microsoft invests USD 1 billion in OpenAI partnership

Microsoft announced a new partnership with OpenAI to develop artificial intelligence in its products. As part of a USD 1 billion investment by Microsoft in the company, they will jointly build new Azure AI supercomputing technologies and Microsoft will become OpenAI’s preferred partner for commercializing new AI technologies. In addition, OpenAI will port its services to run on Microsoft Azure.

The companies will focus on building a large-scale computational platform in Azure, which will train and run increasingly advanced AI models and include hardware that builds on Microsoft’s supercomputing technology. This will create the foundation for advancements in AI "to be implemented in a safe, secure and trustworthy way", Microsoft said in a statement, noting that this is a "critical reason the companies chose to partner together".
