SK Telecom to boost LTE network with more spectrum
Korean telecommunications carrier SK Telecom plans to build additional 1.8 GHz base stations to ensure nationwide coverage for its LTE and LTE-Advanced networks by the end of this year. The rollout of this 20 MHz LTE service will offer speeds of up to 225 Mbps. 

SK Telecom has also announced it has been granted approval to use 10 MHz of 2.1 GHz bandwidth for LTE. The operator plans to deploy LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation technology to combine the 10 MHz in the 800 MHz band, 20 MHz in the 1.8 GHz band, and 10 MHz in the 2.1 GHz band to support speeds of up to 300 Mbps. 

SK Telecom won 30 MHz of 2.1 GHz spectrum in a 2010 auction. The operator will begin building base stations for LTE in the 2.1 GHz band in the second quarter, making the network available for commercialisation as soon as supporting handsets come to market. Until then, SK Telecom will apply Multi Carrier technology to these 2.1 GHz base stations to support its existing LTE networks.

Korea's LTE base grows to 30 mln in February

The number of LTE users in South Korea is estimated to have exceeded 30 million in February. According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the number stood at 29.4 million in January. SK Telecom ended February with 13.9 million LTE subscribers, followed by KT with 8.2 million and LG Uplus with 7.2 million, Yonhap writes. The LTE user base accounts for 80 percent of smartphone users in the country, which stood at 37.88 million in February.

Ofloading and carrier aggregation still not enough to make mobile a fixed-line replacement

New technology means mobile networks are ever increasing in speed. In the Netherlands, the top speeds are currently 42 Mbps over 3G and 50 Mbps over 4G. In countries such as South Korea, operators are deploying carrier aggregation (using two or more frequency bands at the same time) to achieve speeds of 150, 225, 300 Mbps and more. While such speeds raise the possibility of mobile competing with fixed broadband networks, it's premature to assume such a situation will emerge soon.

NSN demonstrates TDD-FDD carrier aggregation with KT, SKT

Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) has successfully demonstrated TDD-FDD carrier aggregation together with Korean operators, Korea Telecom (KT) and SK Telecom (SKT). SK grows Q4 revenues 4.3%, half customers using LTE

Korean operator SK Telecom has claimed a world first with the development of LTE-Advanced 3 Band Carrier Aggregation technology.
