Sky Germany launches Sky Sport OTT service in Switzerland

Sky Deutschland has confirmed the launch of an OTT sports offer in Switzerland from 17 August, as reported earlier. All sports for which Sky holds the rights in Germany and Austria, such as the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, handball, tennis, Formula 1 and golf, will thus be available for streaming over the Sky Sport service in Switzerland. Sky Sport will cost CHF 19.90 a month or CHF 9.90 for a daily pass.

To start, the service will be available over the web (PC, Mac) and iOS and Android applications for smartphones, tablets and streaming devices such as AirPlay and Chromecast. In the coming months, an application for smart TVs and Apple TV will be added, and by the end of the year, Sky expects to have distribution on the TV platforms of Sunrise, Swisscom and UPC Switzerland. Earlier this month it already announced a distribution deal with Sunrise

Sky's launch in Switzerland comes as the satellite TV provider is looking to expand beyond its existing footprint using online services. Sky's also planning to introduce an OTT service in Spain this year. In Switzerland the company will face tough competition in the sports segment, where UPC has just launched its own sports channel to challenge Swisscom's traditional dominance in the pay-TV market.
