Smart Axiata demos 5G services in Cambodia
Cambodian operator Smart Axiata has completed a 5G live trial on 8 July at the Smart Shop Monivong. During this demo, Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt used a 5G-enabled mobile device from Huawei to demonstrate specific 5G use cases.

Smart Axiata launched 4G services in Cambodia in 2014, 4G+ services in 2016, and VoLTE and 4.5G services in 2017. The operator reports it invests around USD 70-80 million per year, mainly in its network infrastructure expansion, as well as mobile broadband connectivity upgrade across the country.

Cambodia recently selected Huawei for its 5G mobile infrastructure rollout. According to telecoms regulator TRC, Cambodia signed on with Huawei but is also open to other 5G suppliers. The deal with Huawei was signed on 28 April in Beijing by Huawei and Cambodia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

Huawei to power Cambodia's 5G services launch, provide services for govt

Huawei has signed a partnership agreement with Cambodia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to provide the country with ICT equipment and a 5G technology training programme, The Phnom Penh Post reports. Huawei will also support the ministry by providing it with a data centre facility, video conference system, fibre-to-the-office equipment and Huawei laptops for central and provincial government offices.

Smart Axiata, Cambodia Prime Minister talk 5G deployment

On the occasion of Smart Axiata's 10th anniversary, Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, CEO of Axiata Group, the majority shareholder of Cambodian operator Smart Axiata, together with Thomas Hundt, CEO of Smart Axiata, and Asri Hassan, Group CCO of Axiata Group, made a courtesy call to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, the prime minister of Cambodia. During the meeting, the two parties discussed Cambodia's 5G launch plans and potential measures to expand mobile broadband services in rural areas.

Cambodian operator Smart Axiata, in partnership with Google and the GSMA, has launched a digital literacy and internet safety programme for local customers. The project will include around 1,400 high school students across three provinces in Cambodia.

Viettel shuns Huawei for 5G network, Metfone still working with Huawei

Vietnam operator Viettel does not plan to use Huawei for its 5G network due to security concerns. However, its Cambodian subsidiary Metfone said it will continue to work with the Chinese supplier, reports the Phnom Penh Post.

Cambodian operator Smart Axiata has launched a digital service called GigaGigs by Smart. GigaGigs is a mobile crowdsourcing platform designed to enable businesses to outsource simple tasks to the general public. Via the GigaGigs by Smart platform, businesses can collect feedback and market data, while rewarding consumers who carry out the tasks.

Metfone to launch 5G service trials in Phnom Penh

Vietnamese operator Viettel Cambodia (Metfone), in partnership with Telecom Cambodia, will launch 5G trials in the Phnom Penh capital. Viettel is currently installing 5G base transceivers and plans to start the trials this month, VNExpress reports, citing Nhong Dinthon, the company's deputy general director. Viettel Cambodia and Telecom Cambodia plan to share their IT infrastructure, as well as invest in areas such as e-government, e-health, e-education, e-agriculture, smart cities, and the IoT.

Huawei to deploy Hong Kong - Cambodia undersea cable - report

Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei, in partnership with China Communications Construction, plans to deploy an undersea fiber-optic communications cable connecting Cambodia's Sihanoukville city and Hong Kong, local newspaper Khmer Times reports. The plan was announced at a meeting between Cambodian minister of transport Sun Chanthol and Huawei Cambodia's CEO Mark Wong. The company executive did not disclose further details on the project launch or completion date.

Smart Axiata launches 4.5G network in Cambodia

Smart Axiata has launched 4.5G services in Cambodia. Smart Axiata, in partnership with Huawei, has deployed 1,500 base stations with 4.5G technology, The Phnom Penh Post reports, citing Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt. According to Hundt, these 1,500 base stations use multiple-input and multiple-output technology and multicarrier aggregation. In 4.5G tests carried out on 21 August, the network delivered speeds of over 40 Mbps for download and 30 Mbps for upload.

Mitsui buys stake in Cambodia's Smart Axiata

Axiata Group has welcomed Mitsui as a new strategic partner at its Cambodian subsidiary Smart Axiata. Axiata has entered into a definitive agreement with Mitsui and its affiliate which will see the parties collectively emerge as a 10 percent strategic partner in Smart. Following the completion of the transaction, Axiata will continue to hold the controlling and majority interest in Smart, with an 82.5 percent stake.
