Smartphone market grows 55% to 158 mln units in Q4

The worldwide smartphone market grew 54.7 percent year over year to 157.8 million units shipped, according to IDC. Growth was stronger than the market researcher's forecast of 40 percent, and the 49.2 percent growth recorded in Q3 2011. On a full-year basis, total smartphone shipments reached 491.4 million units in 2011, up 61.3 percent from 2010 and beating IDC's forecast of 54.7 percent growth. Although this marks a slowdown from over 75 percent growth in 2010, IDC still expects double-digit growth to continue for the foreseeable future. Growth was supported by flagship devices such as the
