Smartphone prices to fall on shift to mass market

The smartphone market will see a huge shift over the next five years, moving from predominantly premium devices aimed at advanced users towards cheaper, mass-market devices, according to a report from Informa Telecoms & Media. The market researcher expects the proportion of smartphones over USD 300 will fall from 81 percent of all smartphones shipped in 2011 to less than 50 percent in 2016. Mobile operators are expected to favour devices priced at USD 200-300 as these support the "democratization" of mobile internet and are easier to subsidise.
