The global mobile market is set to grow to 1.97 billion units in 2017, just 0.5 percent more than 2016, but smartphone sales will rise 5.4 percent year-on-year to 1.56 billion, according to a report from Taipei-based research institute MIC. By the end of the year, smartphones will account for nearly 80 percent of mobile phone sales and will continue to grow at a CAGR of 3.0 percent until they reach 1.72 billion units by 2021, said the report, adding that the combined share of smartphones priced at USD 300 or below is predicted to reach over 60 percent in 2017, with most running on Android.
