Smartphone shipments up only 5% this year but 5G shipments to more than double - IDC

Friday 3 December 2021 | 11:59 CET | News
Global smartphone shipments will grow by only 5.3 percent year-on-year this year, and not by 7.4 percent as earlier expected, the latest study from IDC revealed. Shipment growth will slow on continued component shortages and logistical challenges that will likely not improve until-mid next year. Component issues hit 4G models hard, IDC noted, saying this will cause an accelerated jump to 5G, which is now expected to hit almost 60 percent of worldwide shipments by the end of next year, slowing the decline in smartphone average prices.
