Softbank buys stake in Finnish games developer Supercell
Finnish games developer Supercell has agreed to sell a 51 percent stake in the company to Japan's Softbank and GungHo Online Entertainment, another games developer, for a total USD 1.5 billion. GungHo, which already works with Supercell on some platforms, will put up 20 percent of the investment. Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen said the company holding the controlling stake will be based in Finland.

The investment from Softbank is expected to accelerate the global growth of the maker of 'Clash of Clans'. Started in 2010, Supercell focuses on games for tablets and has already raised over USD 100 million in financing from private firms such as Index Ventures, Accell Partners, Atomico and Initial Capital.

SoftBank to increase Supercell stake to 73.2%

Japanese operator SoftBan has agreed with existing investors to acquire an additional stake in games developer Supercell, a subsidiary of SoftBank in Finland. SoftBank acquired an additional 22.7 percent holding in Supercell by purchasing stock held by existing external investors. Under this transaction, SoftBank's total ownership in Supercell reached 73.2 percent (on a fully-diluted basis) from 50.5 percent. Supercell will continue to operate independently and Ilkka Paananen will continue to serve as CEO.

Softbank grows H1 profit 77% on acquisitions

Japanese communications provider Softbank posted a net income of JPY 394.92 million for the first half ended 30 September. Net income rose by 76.8 percent from JPY 242.53 billion a year earlier. Net sales were JPY 2.60 trillion, up 72.7 percent from JPY 1.50 billion a year earlier on JPY 760.94 billion in newly added Sprint sales from Q2. Softbank confirms talks for stake in Brightstar

Japanese carrier Softbank confirmed it's in talks to take a stake in US-based mobile phone distributor Brightstar. In response to a report in the Nikeei, Softbank said the "matter is under discussion", but no decision has been reached yet. According to the paper, Softbank is in the final stage of negotiations to buy a majority stake in Brightstar from an investment fund and other shareholders, with an eye on eventually boosting its interest to around 70 percent.
