SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son has pledged to invest USD 50 billion in the US and create 50,000 American jobs in the next four years, after a 45-minute meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump, the Nikkei Asian Review reports. SoftBank, which already owns US mobile operator Sprint, will invest in startups, especially IT companies, Son told reporters in the lobby of the Trump Tower in Manhattan, voicing expectations that the US economy will grow and expand business opportunities under the incoming president.
The planned investment will come through a fund SoftBank plans to establish at a targeted amount of up to USD100 billion jointly with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. Welcoming Son's decision, Trump tweeted, "Masa [Son] said he would never do this had we not won the election".
