SoftBank lets go of Marcelo Claure, appoints Combes CEO of SoftBank Group International

The SoftBank Group has appointed a new CEO for its SoftBank Group International (SBGI) operations, saying it and Marcelo Claure have “mutually agreed to part ways” after nine years together. Claure, also the COO of SoftBank, helped implement the turnaround at Sprint and complete the T-Mobile/Sprint merger, as well as working on the repositioning of WeWork and the launch of the company’s venture capital fund and the SB Opportunity Fund, for investment into under-represented racial minorities. The Wall Street Journal attributed the departure to a dispute over "billions" of US dollars in pay.

Michel Combes will take over as CEO of SBGI, overseeing SBGI’s operating and investment portfolio, which include SoftBank Latin America Funds and the SB Opportunity Fund.

Combes joined SBGI as president in April 2020 and serves on several boards of directors at SoftBank portfolio companies, including WeWork, OneWeb, SoFi Technologies, Contentsquare, Jellysmack and Swile. Combes also serves on the boards of directors of Philip Morris International and the Etisalat Group. He was earlier the CEO of Sprint, and before that of Altice, Alcatel-Lucent and Vodafone Europe. He is a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique, Telecom ParisTech and Paris Dauphine University.

Softbank to raise money for HAPs business with first sustainability bond

SoftBank said it will be issuing its first sustainability bond. Money raised from the issue will be put exclusively towards SoftBank's High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) business, which aims to provide wide-area and stable connectivity from the stratosphere. SoftBank will use the funds for capex, research and development, business operations and other areas related to its HAPS business.

SoftBank, Honda test 5G SA, cellular V2X system to reduce collisions between pedestrians and vehicles

SoftBank and Honda R&D have started a use case-based verification of technologies to reduce collisions between pedestrians and vehicles using a 5G standalone mobile communication system (5G SA) and a cellular V2X communication system ("cellular V2X"). Using SoftBank's 5G SA experimental base station installed at Honda's Takasu Proving Ground (located in Takasu Town, Hokkaido Prefecture) and Honda's recognition technology, SoftBank and Honda are conducting technology verifications for three use cases.

SoftBank to open AI-on-5G Lab with Nvidia

SoftBank has teamed up with Nvidia to open a research facility dubbed 'AI-on-5G Lab'. According to SoftBank, at this lab, various services, including AI technology, can be demonstrated and applied to the business domain, in an environment where virtualized radio access networks (vRAN) and multi-access edge computing (MEC) are integrated. The facility, which will feature fully virtualized wireless networks for 5G, will be located in SoftBank's headquarters in 2022.

SoftBank has announced it will adopt the Niantic Lightship Augmented Reality Developer Kit (Niantic Lightship ADRK). SoftBank will use Niantic's Lightship ADRK for its content delivery service offerings, which include 5G LAB, AR Square and other apps.

Softbank lifts revenues in H1, but operating profit slides on mobile price reductions

SoftBank said revenues lifted 12 percent from the year to a historical high of JPY 2.724 trillion for the six month to end September. The operating profit fell however by 3.2 percent to JPY 570.8 billion, pulled down by the Consumer segment, off 10 percent. Enterprise and Yahoo! Japan/Line managed to grow, up 15 percent and 18 percent respectively, despite the negative impact of mobile service price reductions.

Deutsche Telekom to increase stake in T-Mobile US to over 48% in share swap with Softbank

Deutsche Telekom announced plans to increase its stake in T-Mobile US. It will use part of the proceeds from the just announced sale of T-Mobile Netherlands as well as issue new shares to Softbank in exchange for some of the latter's stake in T-Mobile US. In total, the two-fold transaction will raise its stake by 5.3 percent, from 43.2 percent to 48.4 percent, while Softbank's share drops to 3.3 percent.

T-Mobile raises USD 16.6 billion in share sale for Softbank

T-Mobile US has priced its sale of 143.39 million shares on behalf of shareholder Softbank at USD 103 per share, slightly below its latest trading price. This puts the gross proceeds at USD 14.76 billion. The underwriters have a 30-day option to sell another 10.75 million shares at the same price.

SoftBank has asked Marcelo Claure, Sprint's former CEO and current executive chairman, to help WeWork recover from its recent turbulence, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.
