Sony, Docomo to test driverless concept vehicle via 5G trial network in Guam
SmarTone Sony and Japanese operator NTT Docomo will jointly trial Sony's conceptual driverless vehicle, the New Concept Cart SC-1, which uses 5G mobile technologies for various remotely controlled functions. The test will be conducted using the trial network Docomo 5G Open Lab Guam, which will provide test facilities and an outdoor verification environment constructed by Docomo and operated by Docomo Pacific, a subsidiary of the Japanese operator. 

The test will verify data transmission and operational performance required to remotely control the cart from a long distance via high speed connectivity. This will be the firms' second joint trial of 5G services, following a trial conducted in Japan in 2017 to test the real-time transmission of HD video via a 5G system to a 4K digital-signage system fitted to the outside of the cart.

The New Concept Cart SC-1 conceptual vehicle incorporates AI and robotics technologies developed by Sony. Image sensors that exceed human vision are mounted on the vehicle's front, rear and both sides to provide the remote driver with video of the surrounding area, and also to on-board passengers, for example, to show them entertaining AR scenes of the surrounding area. The 4K digital-signage system can be used for displaying advertisements and other content in high-quality resolution to passersby.

Docomo Pacific launches 5G service in Guam and Saipan

Docomo Pacific has launched its 5G mobile service in Guam and Saipan. Docomo Pacific says its 5G service will allow customers to access speeds of up to 250 Mbps for download and 15 Mbps for upload on their mobile devices. Docomo Pacific customers can acquire 5G-enables devices, including the LG V50, Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra, and the soon to come Samsung Galaxy Note 20.

Docomo Pacific to commercially launch VoLTE services in Guam, CNMI in July

Docomo Pacific has announced it is preparing to launch the first VoLTE services in Guam and the CNMI. On 19 June, Docomo Pacific engineers made the first commercial VoLTE call on Guam and the following day they made the first VoLTE call to Saipan. The commercial launch of VoLTE services is scheduled for July for VoLTE capable devices on Docomo Pacific's network.

Sony doubles profit in FY despite lower results at mobile, less smartphones sold

Sony's net profit almost doubled for its full year to end March, jumping to JPY 916.3 billion from 490.8 billion, on revenues up 1 percent year-on-year to JPY 8.544 trillion. Keysight Technologies announced that Keysight's 5G Conformance Toolset was selected by NTT Docomo to ensure 5G new radio (NR) mobile devices comply to the latest 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards prior to market introduction of new 5G services.
