South Africa says will not probe MTN graft claims in Iran

Tuesday 20 March 2012 | 10:57 CET | News
South Africa will not probe allegations that mobile operator MTN paid bribes to win a licence in Iran, in exchange for Pretoria backing Tehran's nuclear programme, AFP reports citing Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. MTN, which owns a 49 percent stake in the Iranian operator Irancell, has said it would investigate the allegations, but denied any wrongdoing. Nkoana-Mashabane told parliament that he has not considered it necessary to launch any investigation into the allegations as he was aware that South Africa's position on Iran's nuclear program had not been influenced by any company.
