South Holland starts plan to become data centre region

Thursday 12 September 2019 | 13:54 CET | News

The Dutch province of South Holland wants to attract data centres. A master plan has been set up in which four promising locations in various business and industrial areas have been designated for the establishment of data centres, according to a report in Het Financieele Dagblad. As a second data centre hub, the Rotterdam-The Hague region could relieve Amsterdam, where electricity use in the region has become a growing problem.

Martin Prins, quartermaster for data centres at the regional development fund told the Dutch daily that several promising locations have been found, and where power is not an issue and where getting permits will be. efficient. No statement has yet been made about the exact locations of the potential data centres, to prevent a rise in land prices. More than the current four locations may become available.

Role of data centres in the digital economy

With the master plan, the region wants to take advantage of the increasingly important role that data centres have in the digital economy. The plan was set up by InnovationQuarter, the province of South Holland, the municipalities of The Hague and Rotterdam and the Ministry of the Interior. The ministry said it was too early to give more details about the plan.

The daily noted that the Digital Infrastructure Netherlands Foundation (DINL) was cautiously positive about the plan. The Dutch Datacenter Association (DDA) is also cautiously enthusiastic about Rotterdam-The Hague region as a possible fully-fledged alternative to Amsterdam.
