Southend-on-Sea becomes next Gigabit city with CityFibre

Thursday 17 March 2016 | 10:32 CET | News
UK fibre infrastructure provider CityFibre will build a 50 km future-proof dark fibre network for the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, connecting 120 key public sector sites throughout the town. The deal, worth GBP 3.24 million over 10 years, will provide scalable, ultra-fast connectivity to Southend's 6000 businesses and supply a backbone for FTTH deployment. It will make Southend CityFibre's latest Gigabit City.

Providing a dark fibre network to interconnect 120 public sites in Southend on Sea does not make it a Gigabit City. The local residents aren’t going to get any faster speeds. Southend already has 96.8% coverage at 24 Mbps and faster and Virgin Media cable coverage at 59.7%. The contract is only worth £3.24 million over ten years and it will probably cost more to build the Network
