Soyuz mission successfully launches 34 OneWeb satellites

Arianespace has announced the completion of its second Soyuz mission this year, which carried into space 34 OneWeb satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This represents the second successful launch for OneWeb, a year after its first six satellites were sent into orbit from the Guiana Space Centre. Adrian Steckel, CEO of OneWeb, said that the company plans to achieve global coverage for its high-speed services by 2021 and revealed that commercial availability for the Arctic region will start later this year.

Arianespace has announced the completion of its second launch of OneWeb satellites this year. The Soyuz mission was carried out as planned on 21 March from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, delivering 34 more satellites into orbit for OneWeb's constellation. This brings the fleet to 74 overall, after the previous two successful missions in February 2019 and February 2020.

Guiana Space Centre puts launches on hold due to Covid-19 pandemic

Launch campaigns at the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana have been suspended until further notice because of the Covid-19 crisis. The move comes in response to measures taken by France to limit the spread of the virus. Launch preparations will resume as soon as allowed by health conditions. In the meantime, Arianespace, French space agency CNES and all companies working at the facility will be placing launch equipment and satellites into standby status.

OneWeb confirmed its upcoming launch of 34 satellites was scheduled for 6 February at 2142 (GMT) / 7 February 0242 (local time) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. This marks the start of a regular launch campaign during 2020 that will rapidly grow OneWeb's first phase constellation of 648 satellites and represents one of the largest civilian satellite launch campaigns in history.
