Soyuz rocket puts first two Galileo satellites in orbit

A Russian Soyuz rocket launched from French Guiana's Kourou space base put in orbit the first two satellites of Europe's Galileo navigation system on 21 October. The successful launch followed a 24-hour delay caused by a faulty valve in a ground system, AFP reports. This was the first launch of a Soyuz rocket in Kourou. Arianespace has orders for 14 Soyuz launches, including the third and fourth Galileo satellites next year. Galileo is designed to have 27 operational satellites and three spares when completed in 2020 and to offer better positioning accuracy than the US's existing GPS system.
