Europe to launch Galileo satellite systems in October
The European Space Agency, launch provider Arianespace and the European Commission plan to launch the first two satellites of Europe's global navigation satellite system on 20 October. This will be the first of a series of Galileo satellite launches by Arianespace from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. The two Galileo satellites will be deployed using a Soyuz launcher. The October launch will mark the inaugural Soyuz flight from its launch facilities in French Guiana, built in the framework of a programme of the European Space Agency.

Soyuz rocket puts first two Galileo satellites in orbit

A Russian Soyuz rocket launched from French Guiana's Kourou space base put in orbit the first two satellites of Europe's Galileo navigation system on 21 October. The successful launch followed a 24-hour delay caused by a faulty valve in a ground system, AFP reports. This was the first launch of a Soyuz rocket in Kourou. EC sees Gallileo costs EUR 500 mln lower than expected

The European satellite navigation project Galileo will cost EUR 500 million less than expected, according to sources within the European Commission cited by German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
