Spain attracts 11 bidders in mobile spectrum auction
Eleven operators have placed their bids in the tender for 270 MHz of spectrum in Spain. The bidders include Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange, Ono, Jazztel, Telecom Castilla la Mancha, R, Telecable de Asturias, Opnatel and Cota. Spain is auctioning 58 blocks in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands. The auction aims to promote new investments in wireless access networks, increase mobile broadband services coverage especially in rural and remote areas to reduce the "digital divide" and encourage innovation and competition in the sector. The tender winner is expected to be announced on or around 30 June.

Spain launches new mobile spectrum auction

The Spanish Minister of Industry has launched a new mobile spectrum auction. The ministry is now auctioning seven spectrum blocks that have not been assigned in the tender competed on 31 July, including one block in the 900 MHz frequency band, another 10 MHz block for exploitation by a regional operator in Extremadura, and five blocks in the 2.6 GHz band.

TeleCable wins 10 MHz spectrum in Spain

Spanish regional cable operator TeleCable has won 10 MHz spectrum in the 2.6 GHz frequency band in the tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. TeleCable offered EUR 708,317 for the 10 MHz spectrum. TeleCable plans to use the recently acquired spectrum to build its own fibre optic network across Spain's Asturias region. Telefonica has won 5 blocks in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands in the spectrum tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. Telefonica deploys 3,000 3G base stations in 900MHz band

Telefonica has deployed 3,000 UMTS base stations using the 900 MHz spectrum block won as part of Spain's recent mobile spectrum refarming process. The deployment is expected to enhance Telefonica's UMTS mobile broadband network coverage, mainly in rural areas and inside buildings. Telefonica's base station deployment project is scheduled for completion in 2013.

Yoigo secures 1800 MHz mobile spectrum

Spanish mobile operator Yoigo has secured more mobile spectrum in the auction held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry. Yoigo was the single bidder for the 1800 MHz frequency band. Yoigo pledged EUR 300 million investment over a three-year period, five times the 60 million minimum, in addition to the EUR 42 million licence fee.

Orange has won a block of 900 MHz bandwidth in the spectrum tender held by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, EFE reports. Orange was the sole bidder in the tender. Spanish ADSL operator and MVNO Jazztel is studying whether to take part in the country's spectrum auction at the end of June that would allow it to offer mobile services over its own network, company CEO Jose Miguel Garcia told Europa Press. Spanish mobile operators Orange and Yoigo have placed their bids to secure more mobile spectrum in an auction held by the Spanish government.
