Spain e-commerce revenues hit EUR 39 bln in 2018

Friday 12 July 2019 | 15:27 CET | News
E-commerce revenues in Spain grew 26.9 percent year-on-year in the final three months of 2018 to reach EUR 10.82 billion, topping EUR 10 billion for the second consecutive quarter, according to the latest figures from market regulator CNMC. The number of transactions increased by over a third (33.2%) to 205 million, with the travel agency and tour operator sector leading the growth in value terms in the October to December period, accounting for 11.5 percent of total revenues, followed by the air transport (8.6%), clothing (6.8%) and betting (4.0%) sectors.

E-commerce transactions within Spain itself accounted for 52.7 percent of the total sales, with the remaining 47.3 percent corresponding to purchases made by Spanish buyers on foreign sites, where sales exceeded domestic purchases by value, generating a deficit of EUR 2.65 billion over the quarter.

Spanish online sellers accounted for 49.2 percent of the revenues of the period, with the remainder going to foreign websites. Around a third (32.9%) of the spending was domestic, between Spanish sellers and buyers, while 16.3 percent of sales on Spanish websites were with foreign buyers, generating a deficit of EUR 3.73 billion over the quarter.

On annual basis, online spend surged by around 29 percent year on year to EUR 39.2 bln in 2018 compared to EUR 31.4 billion in 2017, said the watchdog.
