Spain forces Vodafone to return Ono frequencies - report

The Spanish government has ordered Vodafone Spain to give up mobile phone frequencies, after the operator exceeded its spectrum holdings cap following its acquisition of Spanish cable provider Ono in July, reports Expansion. Vodafone acquired the maximum available spectrum in the tender held in summer 2011, paying EUR 518 million for a total of 20 MHz (2x10 MHz) in the 800 MHz band and 40 MHz (2x20MHz) in the 2.6 GHz band. However, the operator's purchase of Ono, which had 2x10MHz blocks in the 2.6 GHz band in Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Navarra, Murcia, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla meant
