Spain frees up EUR 150 mln to bring fibre to rural areas

Friday 15 March 2019 | 14:51 CET | News
Spain’s council of ministers has approved EUR 150 million in grants to expand fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks to rural areas, reports business daily Cinco Dias. The funds are part of the "Plan 300x100" project launched by the previous administration of Mariano Rajoy a year ago to bring fibre-optic broadband access to all localities and 95 percent of the population by 2021 in a total investment of EUR 525 million. At the time Spain’s FTTH network covered 76 percent of the country’s population but the government said funds would be freed up under the Broadband Expansion Programme (PEBA) to cover all remaining underserved areas.

The vast majority of the grants (EUR 125 million) come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), with the rest coming from the state budget. Spain’s public investment in fibre networks has grown from EUR 50 million in 2016, to EUR 100 million in 2017 and the projected EUR 150 million in 2018, 2019 and 2020, leaving EUR 75 million in 2021.
