Spain freezes line rental, starts universal broadband

Monday 2 January 2012 | 18:00 CET | News
Spain has frozen Telefonica's line rental price at EUR 13.97 a month for 2012, El Mundo reports. Prices rose for natural gas, stamps and motorways but were frozen for electricity, butane and line rental. Telecommunications regulator CMT has held the same price since 2008. Nevertheless, CMT reserves the option to liberalise the segment as it is the only service for which it sets retail prices. Furthermore, the guaranteed minimum universal internet access speed is 1 Mbps as of 1 January. Telefonica said around 200,000 subscribers are eligble to upgrade to 1 Mbps internet and voice for EUR 19.90
