Spain permits 'WiFi4EU' localities to exceed speed limits

Spain's communications regulator CNMC has agreed to allow localities that receive grants to provide Wi-Fi services under the European Commission's new 'WiFi4EU' initiative to offer speeds of at least 30Mbps. The previous speed limit for such public hotspot services set by the now defunct regulator CMT back in 2010 was 0.25Mbps with a view to protecting private operators. However, in a statement the CNMC said it would permit municipalities that obtain the vouchers to exceed the limit because the programme "should not significantly affect competition".
