Spain’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation has launched a public consultation on future use of the 26GHz band for the provision of electronic communication services, above all 5G. In a statement, the ministry said the band will serve as a stimulus for the implementation and development of 5G standalone (5G SA) technology in Spain and is part of the EU-funded Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which envisages some EUR 1.5 billion of investment to promote a technology allowing improved mobile broadband, massive M2M and ultra-reliable low-latency communications.
It added that the 26GHz band is above all suitable for the provision of services in high traffic density areas as well as for industrial, gaming, augmented reality and transport applications. Spain held auctions of 5G-compatible frequencies in the 700MHz and 3.5GHz bands earlier this year and last month begun to reorder spectrum in the latter band to ensure operators have contiguous frequency blocks for the rollout of 5g.
