SpaceX has begun offering its Starlink satellite broadband service in Spain to those who last year expressed an interest in the service, reports Xataka Movil, citing emails sent to users. In the message, Starlink said it will be offering broadband connectivity to people in remote areas at speeds of 100 to 200 Mbps, up from the initial estimated speed of 50 to 150Mbps, via a constellation of 42,000 satellites, around 1,700 of which are currently in operation.
However, the service will cost EUR 9 a year more than initially quoted due to a regulatory fee imposed by the government to cover the cost of the licence to access the electromagnetic spectrum in the public domain. As a result, customers will have to pay EUR 499 for the equipment, EUR 60 for shipping and EUR 108 a month for the service (EUR 99 plus the EUR 9 regulatory fee).
Starlink also said the speed and latency of the service will gradually improve as more ground stations are installed and network software improved.
