STB shipments will remain stable despite rise of media streamers, cord cutters - study

The number of media box shipments worldwide, including pay-TV set-top boxes and media streamers such as Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast and Apple TV, was worth USD 21 million in 2016, according to the latest study from Futuresource. The number of units sold that year reached 339 million, with STBs making up 86 percent of demand. That share is unlikely to decline in 2017 despite the rise of streaming TV, as operators fight the trend by adding features such as SVoD services, voice search and smart home functionality.
