Swiss Federal Council still wants 12 months' data retention

The Swiss Federal Council said in a reply to a motion that the European Court ruling on data retention has no affect on Swiss laws, said Inside-IT.ch. In spring, the European Court of Justice declared the EU data retention directive to be invalid as it breached the rights of the individual. Currently in Switzerland, customer information must be stored for six months, but the law on telecoms surveillance (BUPF) is currently under review with the aim of extending this to twelve months.
