Swiss parliament approves motion to fund research into mobile radiation health effects

Wednesday 16 September 2020 | 15:31 CET | News

The Swiss Council of States, the Upper House of the country's Parliament, has approved a motion that supports research work on the consequences on health of mobile radiations from new technologies. The research work will be financed through capital in the federal budged raised by the mobile auction of early 2019. To finance the research, the government will also promote partnerships between the public sector and private companies.

According to the motion, part of the CHF 380 million raised with the concession of the frequencies must be used specifically to research the effects of mobile radiations. The Federal Council owes it to the population, it said. It is also imperative to commission an experienced research institution to coordinate the research projects and establish a competence centre that also serves as a neutral contact point for authorities and civil society on non-ionizing radiation (NIS) issues, it said in the motion.

The mobile communications and radiation working group of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment earlier published a report on the expansion of 5G and its impact on health. The report noted there was no proof of negative consequences on health from radio frequencies under the limits.
