Swiss parliament calls for minimum internet speed of 10 Mbps

Wednesday 31 May 2017 | 10:03 CET | News
Switzerland's parliament has adopted a motion calling for a higher minimum internet speed, of 10 Mbps rather than the current 2 Mbps. A motion by Christian Democrat MP Martin Candinas was passed by 102 votes for and 86 against. While the minimum speed provided under the universal service will increase soon to 3 Mbps, Candinas said this was still not enough for businesses and people living in outlying areas. The government opposed the motion, saying it was too much to ask Swisscom to increase the speed at the same time as it's investing heavily in rolling out fibre.
