Swisscom claims 1 mln homes connected to fibre broadband

Swisscom said it has now connected over 1 million homes to ultra-fast broadband using a mixture of fibre-optic technologies, even outside major conurbations. Since the start of 2014, bandwidth has been increased at over 200,000 homes and businesses through vectoring, it said. In addition, ten municipalities have now been connected to Fibre to the Street (FTTS). These include Croy, Wila, Iragna, Preles and Rothenthurm. FTTS is now being extended to over 100 more municipalities, it added. Bandwidths of up to 100 Mbps are possible, with FTTH offering up to 1 Gbps.

The roll-out of Fibre to the Home (FTTH) is continuing and more than 800,000 residences and businesses in over 80 towns and cities have now been connected. Swisscom aims to roll out ultra-fast broadband to over 2.3 million homes and companies by the end of 2015, and to more than 4.6 million by 2020, throughout Switzerland. So far, it has laid in excess of 55,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cabling. According to Akamai, Switzerland is ranked first in Europe and third globally for high bandwidth coverage, that is, greater than 10 Mbps.
