T-Mobile US adds free Netflix to all One family plans

T-Mobile US has added free Netflix to its T-Mobile One family plans, as the latest move in its 'Un-carrier' strategy. New and existing customers with two or more lines on the One unlimited plan will receive a standard Netflix subscription free as part of their T-Mobile plan from 12 September. The offer is permanent, and not a limited-time promotion.

On 07 September, T-Mobile is holding a contest on Twitter to promote the new offer. Customers who tweet their favourite quotes, GIFs or memes from Netflix series can win smartphones, T-Mobile and Netflix promotional gifts and a grand prize of tickets to the premier of the new series of 'Stranger Things' by Netflix.

As usual in its marketing, T-Mobile positioned the new offer as a more savvy move than its competitors AT&T and Verizon. "The future of mobile entertainment is not about bolting a satellite dish to the side of your house or resuscitating faded 90s dotcoms. The future is mobile, over-the-top and unlimited," said T-Mobile CEO John Legere. Partnering with fellow "disruptor" Netflix means giving customers something they want - more mobile video, the company said.

T-Mobile added that the new offer is not expected to impact its financial guidance, as the free Netflix should lead to increased customer loyalty.
