Global tablet shipments are set to reach 211.3 million units in 2015, an 8.1 percent fall from 2014, according to the latest data from IDC. The new forecast follows three consecutive quarters of declining worldwide tablet shipments in 2015, including a 12.6 percent fall in Q3. However, the researcher expects sales of detachable tables to continue accelerating as end users shift their demand towards new form factors. The proliferation of detachable offerings from vendors such as Apple, Google and Microsoft, including the introduction of sub-USD 100 detachables, will help drive the transition, with IDC predicting that the segment will nearly double in size in the next year, recording more than 75 percent growth compared to 2015.
In addition, the report predicts that the transition will help Windows-based slates and detachables to more than double their market share by 2019. The switch to detachables should also help Apple reverse the iPad’s fortunes in the coming years as the company targets select enterprise and pro-consumer audiences with the iPad Pro.
