Tele2 Netherlands has attracted 110,000 customers for its unlimited data plan launched 17 May, the company told Telecompaper. In its Q2 results, Tele2 said it had 69,000 Unlimited subscribers at the end of June, meaning growth of around 40,000 new subscribers in a month and a half.
The Unlimited plan was launched in May, shortly after T-Mobile broke open the market with the first unlimited data plan. Tele2 undercut T-Mobile on price, which may be helping it attract more customers. In May, T-Mobile said it had sold 100,000 unlimited subscriptions in the first three months of the offer.
According to Tele2 spokesman Robin Janszen, the new plan has helped increase ARPU. Tele2 reported 1.11 million mobile customers at the end of Q2, with monthly ARPU of just over EUR 18. The figure was up 20 percent year-on-year, due in part to the unlimited plan, which is priced at EUR 25 per month. With 110,000 Unlimited subscribers, the offer is already used by around 10 percent of Tele2's customer base, which should mean a further increase in ARPU in Q3.
The Unlimited plan is attracting both existing and new customers. Customers who were previously on the company's top data plan of 24 GB per month were moved automatically to the Unlimited subscription, meaning a savings of EUR 10 per month.
In total, Tele2 added a net 51,000 new mobile subscribers in Q2, including the 69,000 Unlimited subscribers. The company declined to say how many of the unlimited subscribers are new customers for the operator.
Tele2 CEO Jon James said the success of the new offer has made Tele2 the fastest growing unlimited provider on the market. "This underlines are success in transforming the Dutch mobile market for good," he said.
