Telefonica and Asti sign connected mobile robotics deal
Telefonica has signed an enhanced global commercial agreement with Spanish mobile robots developer Asti Mobile Robotics to promote the digitalisation of intralogistics in the industrial sector. The two companies have been collaborating for two years and have now agreed to market an integral solution to help the industrial sector automate repetitive logistical processes within their facilities by enhancing tools such as autonomous vehicles and mobile robot AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) with mobile connectivity, Blockchain traceability and Edge Computing technology.

Telefonica said the main enabler of the so-called "Wireless Factories" concept is the 5G mobile communication standard, which enables mobile robots to communicate continuously and without interruption both in indoor and outdoor environments. The robots are guided via a technology known as SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping), allowing them to build a map of the environment and simultaneously locate themselves to navigate it, capturing and receiving the information from their sensors.

The technology also make it possible to keep track of the battery life and state of activity of the robot fleet so that companies can plan the loading processes of each robot in real time. In addition, the application of Artificial Intelligence models allows companies to carry out predictive maintenance of the entire fleet of devices.

Telefonica added that its Telefonica Tech unit and Asti have also partnered to develop a service for disinfecting environments using ultraviolet light based on Asti's Zenzoe robot with a view to reinforcing security measures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
