Telefonica Deutschland extends fibre backhaul contract with Deutsche Telekom

Telefonica Deutschland has extended its fibe backhaul contract with Deutsche Telekom. The companies have agreed to connect at least 5,000 of Telefonica's mobile base stations with Telekom's fibre-optic network in the long term. 

Telekom said this was a significant expansion of their existing backhaul contract dating to 2011. The synergies will help further the incumbent's fibre roll-out across Germany, while Telefonica can meet the growing demand for data services and prepare for the launch of 5G with increased fibre in its backhaul.

BBV Rhein-Main, the regional subsidiary of  BVV Deutschland, announced that it has stopped marketing its fibre network after resistance from local administration representatives. The company wanted to invest EUR 8 million in fibre expansion in Munster as well as in the districts of Breitefeld and Altheim. The investment would have been fully financed by BBV Rhein-Main, international partners and infrastructure funds, the company said.

Telefonica Deutschland announced the connection of 1,000 sites on its O2 mobile network to the fibre network infrastructure of Unitymedia. The company said this will help make it fit for the future 5G standard.

Telefonica Deutschland has awarded SIAE Microelettronica a turn-key contract for DCN (Data Communication Networks) migration services across its backhaul network. The German operator plans to update its DCN by implementing a new common-DCN architectural model. SIAE will provide project management, IP network design, new-model implementation and operation service delivery.

Telefonica Next supports companies in protecting data privacy of Big Data

Telefonica Deutschland's subsidiary Telefonica Next created a TUV-certified process that anonymises data reliably and at the source with the so-called Data Anonymization Platform (DAP). Analyses from anonymised mobile network data currently support traffic planning in Germany among others. Telefonica Next now also offers this procedure to other companies for their data, for example from the banking or insurance sector.

Telefonica Germany and NGN Fiber hold ground-breaking ceremony for backhaul cooperation

Telefonica Germany and the Bavarian-based NGN Fiber Network held the official ground-breaking ceremony for their multi-year fibre-optic cooperation at a mobile base station in Hofoldinger Forst near Munich. Telefonica and NGN Fiber Network are cooperating to connect 1,500 of Telefonica's mobile sites to fibre-optic lines with the aim of improving the performance of Telefonica's LTE network while paving the way for 5G.

Vodafone, Telefonica partner on fibre backhaul in Germany, reach deal on 3.5 GHz spectrum

Vodafone and Telefonica Deutschland have agreed to launch a pilot project to connect their mobile sites to each other's fibre-optic lines. Beginning in July, the first 100 shared or neighbouring mobile sites will be connected to the companies' respective fibre networks.
