Telefonica loaned customers EUR 45 mln via Movistar Money last year
Telefonica has revealed that it granted customers over 16,000 loans amounting to a total of EUR 45 million via its Movistar Money service in 2019. The figure amounts to an average of EUR 124,000 a day, said the operator. In total, the company has granted more than 28,000 loans and around EUR 77 million in cash since the service was launched in association with long-time financial services partner CaixaBank.

Movistar customers can request a loan of between EUR 1,000 and EUR 4,000 in less than 48 hours with no formalisation fee or additional documentation required. It can then be paid back via their monthly Movistar services bill over 24, 36 or 48 months at an interest rate (APR) of 16.48 percent.

Telefonica has joined forces with financial services provider Banco Sabadell to launch a pilot of its consumer loan business in Mexico. As in Spain and Colombia, the service will be called Movistar Money and will initially be offered to select Movistar customers in the country, who will be able to request a loan of up to MXN 45,000 and pay it back via their monthly Movistar services bill, said Telefonica Mexico, without providing interest rate details.

Telefonica has set up a joint venture with Spanish bank BBVA to develop a consumer loan business in Colombia, confirming earlier reports. Spanish operator Masmovil is set to revamp the 'Yoicard' banking service it launched nearly two years ago with a new credit card for customers of its Yoigo brand called 'MoneyGO', reports Movilonia.
