Telefonica Mexico to appeal record USD 25 mln fine

Telefonica's Mexican unit has vowed to appeal a record fine of MXN 410.9 million (around USD 25 million) imposed by Mexico's telecoms watchdog IFT as a result of the "high proportion of dropped calls" recorded in the central city of Leon in Guanajuato state. In a statement, Telefonica described the IFT's decision as "disproportionate and unjustified" due to inconsistencies in the monitoring process and the means used to calculate the fine. The IFT gave Telefonica 15 days to appeal against the fine, which it described as the largest handed down since the regulator was formed in September
