Telefonica promotes CFO Mark Evans to CEO at O2 UK

Telefonica UK (O2) has confirmed that Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Mark Evans has been appointed as CEO to take over from Ronan Dunne on 01 August. He will also join the Telefonica Executive Committee. Dunne has been CEO of Telefonica UK since January 2008, and indicated in September 2015 that he planned to step down from the UK Board and Telefonica Executive Committee.

Dunne has recently finished a strategic review of options for the UK business, which led to Telefonica's confirmation that Telefonica UK will be reconsolidated within the Telefonica group. He will step down from the Board on 31 July, but continue to support the business until September. Evans also manages the giffgaff brand, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Telefonica, and is Chairman of Tesco Mobile.

Telefonica has appointed the Argentinian executive Mariano de Beer as its new chief commercial and digital officer, replacing Eduardo Navarro de Carvalho, who was recently named CEO of Telefonica Brasil. De Beer was previously Microsoft's president of new markets in Latin America, having earlier held senior positions at Telefonica Brasil. He will take over from Navarro on 01 January and will report directly to Telefonica CEO Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete.

O2 UK reshuffles top management

O2 UK announced further changes to its top management, after the appointment in June of Mark Evans as CEO. Evans will be replaced as CFO by strategy and transformation director Patricia Cobian. Ben Dowd, previously business director, takes the position of sales director. He will be responsible for all of the mobile operator's sales and distribution channels, including O2 stores, online, channel sales and supply chain.

Ronan Dunne, former CEO of O2 UK, is set to take a senior post with US telecoms company Verizon, reports The Times citing unnamed City sources. The move could be announced in the next few weeks and is likely to come with a steep pay increase for Dunne. Lowell McAdam, Verizon's executive chairman, earned USD 18.3 million in 2015, and outgoing Verizon Wireless head Daniel Mead earned USD 8.3 million. BBC finds O2 customer data being sold online

An investigation by the Victoria Derbyshire programme has found that customer data from O2 UK is being sold on the dark net, reports BBC News. The criminals are believed to have used passwords and usernames stolen in 2013 from gaming website XSplit to log into O2 accounts. When the details matched, they were able to access O2 customer data, including e-mails, phone numbers and dates of birth. O2 said it has reported the incident to the police and was assisting with their enquiries.

O2 Touch rugby programme has 17,500 registered players

O2 UK confirmed that the O2 Touch rugby programme has reached and surpassed its target of introducing 15,000 registered players to the game by summer 2017. There are now 17,500 O2 Touch players, playing touch rugby on a regular basis across England. The programme has grown by 34 percent since the 2015 Rugby World Cup, with an increase of 5,774 players and 51 new O2 Touch centres established, bringing the total number of centres to 321 nationwide.

O2 Recycle scheme recycles 2 million phones

O2 UK (Telefonica) confirmed that a total of 2 million old mobile phones have now been recycled through the O2 Recycle programme, which launched in 2009. The scheme pays customers for their old phones and gadgets. In 2015, over 420,000 devices were sent to O2 Recycle. Of these, up to 99 percent were sold second-hand instead of being dismantled, with around 173,000 devices being kept within the UK.

O2 Roaming covers 30 new countries outside Europe

O2 UK (Telefonica) confirmed that the O2 Travel roaming service for pay monthly consumer customers now covers more countries. From 14 July, the service covers 30 new destinations outside Europe, including the US, Australia and Turkey. As a result, the service now covers a total of 65 destinations worldwide. Customers will pay a single, flat daily charge in eligible countries outside of Europe - GBP 3.99 a day in Turkey and GBP 4.99 a day outside of Europe.

UK mobile network operators are set to mount legal changes to any Ofcom spectrum auction changes, reports The Sunday Telegraph. O2 UK has announced a student deal offering a free 16-25 Railcard and 20 percent off an O2 Refresh airtime plan.
