Telefonica to close one ADSL exchange a day until 2020

Telefonica has accelerated its network transformation plans, announcing that it intends to close down some 653 ADSL exchanges by 2020. The company said it will shut down 253 copper plants that are no longer in use due to the expansion of its FTTH network this year alone, followed by 200 next year and 200 more in 2020. In its statement, Telefonica highlighted the infrastructure and energy saving benefits of the so-called FARO project, with a 2,400-pair copper network serving 2,400 customers replaced by a 256-fibre cable serving some 16,384 customers, meaning fibre-optic networks take up less
