Telefonica unveils dedicated e-sports portal

Monday 19 June 2017 | 09:01 CET | News

Telefonica has announced the launch of a dedicated e-sports portal as it moves to consolidate its move into the fast-growing electronic sports sector. The new portal will be called www.movistaresports.com and will feature the latest news about e-sports teams, TV channels and leagues. It will also feature tools, tutorials and tips from the top video game professionals as well as live streams of major tournaments and digital events.

Earlier this year the operator signed a strategic agreement with e-sports company ESL to develop a platform with exclusive content for its Movistar+ brand in Spain and to create a professional club for electronic sports. Under the terms of the deal, Telefonica launched a dedicated channel called Movistar eSports and set up an e-sports club called Movistar Riders made up of various professional video game teams based at the Movistar Game Centre.

Earlier this month, Telefonica inaugurated what it describes as the first high-performance e-sports centre in Europe in Madrid’s Matadero arts centre.
