Telefonica using IoT drone to detect forest fires in Madrid

Wednesday 5 June 2019 | 13:50 CET | News
Telefonica has teamed up with Madrid's Carlos III University, Divisek and Dronitec to carry out a successful trial of an early forest fire detection system with drones connected to the operator's Internet of Things (IoT) network. The pilot conducted in Matachines in northern Madrid took advantage of thermal sensors on Telefonica's telecommunications towers that can detect any outbreaks of fire in a 15km radius. The towers also house a drone equipped with thermal and optical cameras that can be sent to collect images of the possible fire even in conditions of low visibility.
