Telenor comes fourth among telecoms operators in Ranking Digital Rights accountability index

Thursday 16 May 2019 | 14:08 CET | News

Telenor said that it has been added to the Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) Corporate Accountability Index for the first time. The index is published every two years and Telenor ranked fourth out of a dozen evaluated telecommunications operators, scoring 45 points.

RDR said Microsoft unseated Google at the top of the index for internet and mobile ecosystem companies. Microsoft scored 62 points and Google 61. Telefonica outpaced Vodafone among telecommunications companies, scoring 57 points to Vodafone’s 62.

Anita Househam, director of Telenor Group Sustainability, welcomed the opportunity to learn. Telenor also welcomes the two-year review process that RDR has initiated to ensure that its methodology is upgraded, strengthened and expanded.

For the telecommunications companies, RDR looked at global group level policies for relevant indicators plus the home operating subsidiary’s prepaid and post-paid mobile services, and fixed-line broadband. The RDR suggests to Telenor that improvements can be made to policy transparency and practices affecting freedom of expression and privacy in key areas.

The 2019 RDR Corporate Accountability Index examined 24 of the world’s largest internet, mobile and telecommunications companies in terms of their commitments and policies affecting freedom of expression and privacy.  The companies evaluated collectively provide products and services used by more than half of the world’s 4.3 billion internet users.

The RDR Index Methodology sets minimum standards for what companies should disclose about their rules and processes for enforcing them, data privacy and security policies and practices, and how they handle government demands to remove or block content, to shut down internet services, or to access user information and communications.
