Telenor Group starts pilot of IoT app for cars
Telenor Group started testing Telenor Connect, a new IoT app enabling drivers to keep track of their car. It also established a new Nordic Car Connect Forum with key partners. Telenor Connect will first be tested in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and will later on be rolled out in the Nordics. The company said it is possible the service will also be launched in other markets it covers.

The app gives drivers an overview of vehicle status and access to a complete ecosystem of car-related and tailored services within the app. A network of trusted partners will offer personalised and timely offers to the customer. Telenor's partners include Bertel O. Steen (Norway only), Circle K Europe, EasyPark, If P&C Insurance, and Mekonomen Group. The customer can choose which services they want to use and with whom to share data with from the app.

The app will also offer access to a LTE Wi-Fi hotspot in the car, enabling a range of tailored in-car entertainment services on the move.

The IoT initiative will be unveiled at the first Nordic Car Connect Forum at StartupLab in Oslo. The newly established forum gathers representatives across sectors, company size and borders.

Telenor Sweden said the second Nordic Car Connect forum took place at Stockholm Epicenter on 28 March. Linda Asplund, head of innovation at Telenor Sweden, said there has so far been a gap for a platform offering an authentic ecosystem with an open developer interface. This is required for a dynamic market for smart services. This low entry threshold is encouraging business from a variety of sectors to look at connected car opportunities.

Telia adds EasyPark app to Telia Sense

Telia Company said it has added EasyPark to its Telia Sense connected car service. The application pays for parking spot time, to avoid overpaying once one has left the car park. Telia Sense went to market in November 2016 and provides services from car retailer Bilia, vehicle inspection company Bilprovningen, breakdown repair company Viking Vagassistans and insurer Folksam.

Telenor Group picks IMImobile cloud virtualisation system

IMImobile has announced that it signed a global framework agreement to supply the Telenor Group with its cloud Digital Service Delivery Platform and VAS (Value Added Services) Virtualisation System. The deal follows a competitive tendering process, and the services will be provided to Telenor Business Units throughout the group.

Telenor is promising 1 GB of bonus mobile internet allowance to its customers for every model won by members of the Norwegian alpine skiing team in the FIS Alpine Ski World Championship in St Moritz in Switzerland, which starts on 06 February. Nokia launches new version of 'Impact' IoT platform

Nokia announced updates to its IoT platform 'Impact', an acronym that stands for 'Intelligent management platform for all connected things'. The updates enable customers to deploy new services and business models for key IoT vertical applications, including smart parking, smart lighting and transportation/automotive. Nokia said its framework gives communication service providers, enterprises and governments a standards-based platform on which to build and scale new IoT services.

Grameenphone FY revenue up 9.6%, subscribers up 2.2%

Bangladesh's largest mobile operator, Grameenphone, reported 9.6 percent growth in revenue for 2016 to BDT 114.9 billion for 2016. Higher revenue and controlled operating expenditure led to EBITDA of BDT 63.8 billion, with an improved 55.3 percent margin. Net profit reached BDT 22.5 billion, up by 14 percent from BDT 19.7 billion in 2015. Earnings per share (EPS) stood at BDT 16.68.

Telenor, Q-Free formally present smart car park in Trondheim

Telenor Norway and Q-Free presented their smart car park pilot that uses Narrow-band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) on 30 January, according to an article on the website of regional newspaper Adressavisen. A representative of the national highways agency attended the presentation in Trondheim and said it was testing the precision and functioning of the system. Installing it in several parts of the city would give the agency an idea of travelling and parking habits, enabling improvements in transport planning.

Ford launches Wi-Fi plugin device for older model cars

Ford launched a plugin device called SmartLink that brings Wi-Fi connectivity to older model cars. The device plugs into the OBD II port below the steering wheel and is compatible with 2010 – 2016 model year Ford and Lincoln vehicles that are not equipped with a modem access. SmartLink can be obtained at Ford and Lincoln dealerships starting this summer. US mobile operators AT&T and Verizon launched similar devices that bring Wi-Fi connectivity to older model cars.
